YACCRYPTED is the fusion of YACC (Yet Another Conference on Cryptography) and CRYPTO'PUCES symposia. These were held every two years on the island of Porquerolles, since 2002 for the first and since 2007 for the second, and concern cryptography.

The first was a colloquium focusing on mathematical problems from cryptography and mainly concerned number theory and algebraic geometry. The application aspects were also discussed and he tried to bring the academic world of researchers from the university and the CNRS together with the members of the business R & D sectors.

The second was a colloquium focusing on embedded cryptography on smart cards. The specificity of these, namely the low storage capacities, the embedded specific processors and the possibilities of physical and software attacks induce mathematical methods and appropriate algorithms. Its goal was to bring together academic research in secure cryptography and secure systems and the smart card industry and applications that use cryptography.

The evolution of the first of the theoretical aspects towards the practical aspects joined the evolution of the second which evolved precisely in the opposite direction. It then seemed natural to merge these two symposia.

The YACCRYPTED symposium is backed by the two FRUMAM laboratories, the I2M and the IMATH, as well as the École des Mines de Saint Etienne.

We briefly describe these three labs below:

The IMATH (Institute of MATH Sciences of Toulon), directed by Cédric Galusinski, is a laboratory of the University of Toulon consisting of 24 teacher-researchers and a research engineer.

This laboratory, recognized by the Ministry as a reception team (EA 2134), brings together three research themes: the "Applied Nonlinear Analysis" (AA) thematic centered around optimization, the calculation of variations, the nonlinear partial differential equations and the asymptotic analysis, the "Numerical Modeling" (MN) thematic centered around the modeling of biphasic media, the analysis of hyperbolic systems and kinetic models as well as probabilistic numerical methods, and finally the "Applied Algebra and Computer Science" (IAA) thematic centered on discrete mathematics, coding, cryptography, computer arithmetic, number theory and algebraic geometry. This last theme is directed by Yves Aubry.

The research conducted in this team is very theoretical. This is to study the mathematical objects present in cryptography and the theory of error correcting codes. Number theory and algebraic geometry are the mathematics involved.

However, the results obtained in this last thematic, besides their theoretical aspect, lead to many applications: digital images, data storage, digital communication, public cryptography, secret cryptography.

The I2M

The Institute of Mathematics of Marseille (I2M, UMR 7373) is a UMR (Mixed Research Unit) of the CNRS which depends scientifically on the INSMI (Institute of Mathematical Sciences and their Interactions) and the AMU (Aix-Marseille University). It is directed by Pascal Hubert and includes 30 CNRS researchers, 130 teacher-researchers, 60 doctoral students, 20 post-doctoral researchers and 15 technical and administrative staff. The research activities are divided into five groups:

  • Applied Analysis (AA)
  • Analysis, Geometry, Topology (AGT)
  • Geometry, Dynamics, Arithmetic and Combinatorics (GDAC)
  • Arithmetic, Geometry, Logic and Representations (AGLR)
  • Random Mathematics (ALEA)

The ATI team (Arithmetic and Theory of Information) of the Arithmetic, Geometry, Logic and Representations group (AGLR), of which Pierre Barthélémy is a member, is made up of researchers working at the interface between number theory, algebraic geometry and their applications to the theory of the information (including correcting codes and cryptography).


Member of the Institute Mines-Telecom, attached to the Ministry of Industry, the School of Mines of Saint-Etienne is among the most prestigious engineering schools in France.

Dedicated to the training of general engineers and high-level specialties, deploying industry-oriented research, Mines Saint-Étienne also plays a leading role in supporting companies in the industrial transition through its Mines Saint-Étienne program. Tech. One of the missions of the École des Mines Saint-Étienne is the scientific research at the best level and its valuation for improving the competitiveness of companies. Its aim is to relay the country's economic policy and accelerate sustainable industrial development through innovative and responsive contributions.

The Secure Systems and Architectures (SAS) department is a joint research team between CEA and Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne.

The mission of this department is to guarantee the integrity of the electronic components and the data they contain (such as cryptography keys, software, intellectual property blocks, data in memory, etc.) towards fraudulent manipulation commonly called "attacks". For this, the physical phenomena that allow these attacks are finely modeled, thanks in particular to experiments carried out on state-of-the-art equipment (consumed current analysis bench, laser fault injection benches, by electromagnetic pulse, etc.).

The developed models are then used to design protections and the most effective of them are finally integrated into the design flows ("secure by design" method).


The communities represented in YACCRYPTED range from pure mathematics to computer science. The research carried out ranges from mathematical results giving rise to new theorems to attacks taking advantage of physical phenomena related to the functioning of the components (execution time, power consumption, electromagnetic radiation, heat dissipation) and taking advantage of possibilities. related to the hardware and software structure of the components (fault attacks or failures of the embedded system).

We bring together in this new colloquium two communities: one, academic, made up of researchers from the university and the CNRS, and the other, from the industry, made up of members of the R & D sectors of companies and the CEA.

The smart card industry is particularly present in the South Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and the creation of the global competitive cluster SCS - Solutions Communicantes Sécurisées, of which EMSE is a founding member and whose I2M is part, shows its importance.


The mathematics involved in the cryptography sector we are targeting comes from discrete mathematics, algebraic number theory and algebraic geometry with a point of view on finite fields. The search for solutions adapted to new (electronic) technologies raises combinatorial problems that translate into the language of finite fields. Geometric codes are defined on curves or more generally projective algebraic varieties. Their parameters depend on the number of rational points of these varieties, the dimension of Riemann-Roch spaces or even finite geometry configurations. Cryptosystems depend on arithmetic on finite fields or are defined on elliptic curves or more generally on jacobian curves. In particular, the notions of pairings or models of elliptic curves are present.


YACCRYPTED is an international conference that will bring together some thirty researchers in the field of cryptography. We chose a narrower format to foster interactions and scientific exchange.

Each half day will be dedicated to a fundamental theme of embedded cryptography, and will be led by a specialist of the question. The topics covered in this conference will be varied and will interest both "academic" researchers and researchers more applied or more concerned with the technological and industrial aspects of these disciplines. Major French companies involved in cryptographic research naturally participate in the event (FT-research and development, ST-Microelectronics, Canal +, Gemalto (they were included with Thales), SCM-Microelectronics, Thales, Inside Secure, Technicolor).

The symposium will take place in Porquerolles from May 11 to 15, 2020. The aim is to take stock of the most recent results in these areas of research and to allow two communities of researchers who are too often disjointed to meet. The South region is particularly well placed to organize such an event because the largest micro-electronics companies are located there, which encourages them to participate.


The purpose of the YACCRYTED conference is to make a regular update on the state of research, and the development of methods and tools used in cryptography. The size of the conference is limited to about thirty participants in order to provide researchers with an unusual working and exchange environment for a meeting of cryptologists. Indeed, cryptographic research is very active worldwide, there can be counted a hundred or so international events each year. The main conferences in these fields depend on an international organization, they are itinerant and they bring together several hundred researchers. There are only two other regular meetings on the theme of YACCRYPTED that are organized on the national territory. The first is a national conference organized by the C2 group (coding / cryptography) of the GDR Informatique et Mathématique which aims to gather (every 16 months) French PhD students and researchers concerned with coding and cryptography. The second is the WCC (Workshop on Coding and Cryptography) conference organized by the SECRET project of INRIA (National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation) in Paris which is also held every two years, every two years. outside France, once in two in Paris. The YACCRYPTED conference will be a privileged place for exchanges between academic researchers and industry researchers particularly involved in the Secure Communication Solution (SCS).

By supporting the organization of the YACCRYPTED conference, the South-Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region contributes to the development of a scientific discipline in which a large number of companies from the South region are involved, through a demonstration original on the national and international levels.
